Caracas\/Oslo, 21 Nov 2025 (BNN Web) \u2013<\/strong> Venezuela\u2019s Attorney General Tarek William Saab warned on Wednesday that opposition leader Mar\u00eda Corina Machado will be officially declared a \u201cfugitive from justice\u201d if she leaves the country to collect her 2025 Nobel Peace Prize in Oslo on December 10.<\/p>\n Speaking to AFP, Saab claimed Machado \u2013 who has been forced into hiding to evade arrest \u2013 is under investigation for \u201cconspiracy, incitement to hatred, and terrorism.\u201d He added that she is also being probed for allegedly supporting recent U.S. military operations in the Caribbean.<\/p>\n The 58-year-old Machado was awarded the Nobel Peace Prize in October for her \u201csustained and courageous struggle for a peaceful transition from dictatorship to democracy\u201d in Venezuela. The Nobel Committee described her as \u201cone of the most extraordinary examples of civilian courage in Latin America in recent times.\u201d<\/p>\n A Prize Born of Defiance<\/strong><\/p>\n Machado has spent years denouncing President Nicol\u00e1s Maduro\u2019s government as a \u201ccriminal regime\u201d and calling for its removal. Barred by the regime from running in the 2024 presidential election \u2013 widely condemned internationally as fraudulent \u2013 she rallied the opposition behind substitute candidate Edmundo Gonz\u00e1lez, who independent polls and voting-tally evidence showed won by a landslide. The government nevertheless declared Maduro the victor, prompting mass protests and a crackdown that forced Gonz\u00e1lez to flee to Spain.<\/p>\n Personal Risk vs. Global Honor<\/strong><\/p>\n Nobel Committee Chairman J\u00f8rgen Watne Frydnes expressed hope that Machado will be able to attend the December 10 ceremony in Oslo but acknowledged the \u201cextremely serious\u201d security threats she faces.<\/p>\n In her first reaction to the prize, a visibly moved Machado said: \u201cI am just one person. I certainly do not deserve this alone. This belongs to an entire society that refuses to surrender.\u201d<\/p>\n Among those congratulating her was U.S. President Donald Trump, whose administration has sharply escalated pressure on Maduro, including naval operations in the Caribbean that Caracas claims have killed over 80 Venezuelans.<\/p>\n Escalating Tensions<\/strong><\/p>\n In a video manifesto released Tuesday titled \u201cFreedom Manifesto,\u201d Machado urged Venezuela\u2019s armed forces to abandon the Maduro government and join the people in building a new era \u201cwhere our natural rights will prevail.\u201d<\/p>\n The Maduro regime has responded by intensifying threats against opposition figures.
