{"id":33619,"date":"2025-11-27T12:19:56","date_gmt":"2025-11-27T15:49:56","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/bnnweb.com\/?p=2818"},"modified":"2025-11-27T12:19:56","modified_gmt":"2025-11-27T15:49:56","slug":"new-zealand-declares-war-on-feral-cats-all-2-5-million-to-be-eradicated-by-2050","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/mediapbn.com\/?p=33619","title":{"rendered":"New Zealand Declares War on Feral Cats: All 2.5 Million to Be Eradicated by 2050"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p dir=\"auto\"><strong>New Zealand Declares War on Feral Cats: All 2.5 Million to Be Eradicated by 2050<\/strong><\/p>\n<p dir=\"auto\"><strong>Wellington, 26 November 2025<\/strong> (<strong>BNN Web Staff) <\/strong>\u2013 In a dramatic escalation of its world-famous conservation ambitions, New Zealand has officially added feral cats to its hit list under the Predator Free 2050 programme, vowing to completely eliminate the country\u2019s estimated 2.5 million wild felines by mid-century.<\/p>\n<p dir=\"auto\">Conservation Minister Tama Potaka didn\u2019t mince words, branding feral cats \u201cstone-cold killers\u201d of the nation\u2019s unique wildlife.<\/p>\n<p dir=\"auto\">\u201cThese are not your cuddly house pets,\u201d Potaka said. \u201cFeral cats live independently of humans, survive entirely by hunting, and are devastating our native birds, bats, lizards and insects.\u201d<\/p>\n<p dir=\"auto\"><strong>Devastating Toll on Iconic Species<\/strong><\/p>\n<ul dir=\"auto\">\n<li>In just one week near Ohakune on the North Island, feral cats killed more than 100 short-tailed bats \u2013 one of the world\u2019s rarest mammals.<\/li>\n<li>On Rakiura\/Stewart Island, they have driven the pukunui (Southern New Zealand dotterel) to the brink of extinction.<\/li>\n<li>Across Aotearoa, these predators \u2013 which can grow up to 1 metre long (including tail) and weigh 7 kg \u2013 now roam from farmland to remote forests and coastal islands.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p dir=\"auto\">Feral cats also spread toxoplasmosis, a parasite that threatens dolphins, harms human health, and can infect livestock, causing economic losses for farmers.<\/p>\n<p dir=\"auto\">Predator Free 2050: The Boldest Conservation Goal on Earth<\/p>\n<p dir=\"auto\">Launched in 2016, Predator Free 2050 aims to rid New Zealand of the most damaging introduced predators. Until now, the target list included rats, possums, stoats, ferrets and weasels. Feral cats are the first new mammal to be formally added.<\/p>\n<p dir=\"auto\">\u201cRemoving feral cats will allow our biodiversity to flourish, protect our heritage landscapes, and preserve New Zealand\u2019s unique ecological identity,\u201d Potaka declared.<\/p>\n<p dir=\"auto\"><strong>How Will They Do It?<\/strong><\/p>\n<p dir=\"auto\">The Department of Conservation (DOC) is trialling innovative and controversial methods:<\/p>\n<ul dir=\"auto\">\n<li>Using non-toxic meat-based lures to attract cats<\/li>\n<li>Followed by 1080 poison baits (already widely used against possums and rats)<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p dir=\"auto\">Critics warn that 1080 can harm non-target species, including native birds and dogs, but supporters argue it is the most effective tool available at scale.<\/p>\n<p dir=\"auto\">A detailed national feral-cat eradication strategy is expected to be released by March 2026.<\/p>\n<p dir=\"auto\"><strong>A Global Conservation Beacon<\/strong><\/p>\n<p dir=\"auto\">New Zealand is home to some of the rarest and most unusual wildlife on the planet \u2013 much of it found nowhere else.
