Australian Teens Take Government to High Court: \u201cBan Predators and Harmful Content \u2013 Not Us\u201d<\/strong><\/p>\n Sydney, 27 November 2025 (BNN Web Staff) \u2013<\/strong> Two 15-year-olds have launched a landmark legal challenge in Australia\u2019s High Court against the world\u2019s toughest social media age-restriction law, arguing that banning under-16s from platforms is not the solution to online harm.<\/p>\n From 10 December, companies including Meta (Instagram\/Facebook), TikTok, YouTube, Snapchat, Reddit and X must prevent anyone under 16 from holding an account \u2013 or face multi-million-dollar fines.<\/p>\n But teenagers Noah Jones<\/strong> and Macy Newland<\/strong>, backed by the Digital Freedom Project, say the blanket ban is heavy-handed and ineffective.<\/p>\n Speaking on BBC Radio 4\u2019s Today programme, Noah said: \u201cThere are definitely bad things online, but banning kids isn\u2019t the answer. Social media giants should be using their billions to hunt down predators and remove harmful content \u2013 not wasting resources trying to keep 15-year-olds off their apps just to avoid government fines.\u201d<\/p>\n Macy added that social media also brings \u201cso much good\u201d \u2013 education, staying connected with friends, and learning about politics and the world. \u201cDemocracy doesn\u2019t magically start at 16,\u201d she said. \u201cThis law cuts us off from important conversations and relationships.\u201d<\/p>\n The pair argue that better solutions already exist:<\/strong><\/em><\/p>\n Instead of a total ban, they want platforms should be forced to clean up their sites.<\/p>\n Government Stands Firm<\/strong><\/em><\/p>\n Communications Minister Anika Wells<\/strong> responded defiantly in parliament: \u201cWe will not be intimidated by threats, legal challenges, or big tech.
