Washington, DC (US), December 1, 2025, BNN Web Staff: US President Donald Trump signaled a sweeping and prolonged halt to asylum processing, saying he intends to impose a pause \u201cfor a long time\u201d as part of a broader overhaul of immigration policy.<\/p>\n
Speaking to reporters aboard Air Force One, Trump referenced the Afghan national accused in the recent shooting near the White House and argued that individuals from certain countries \u201cshouldn\u2019t be in our country.\u201d<\/p>\n
When asked how long the pause on asylum would last, Trump responded: \u201cFor a long time. No time limit. We don\u2019t want those people\u2026 many of them are no good.\u201d<\/p>\n
He went on to sharply criticize migrants from nations such as Somalia, claiming those countries lack functioning governance and are plagued by violence.
\n\u201cCountries like Somalia have virtually no government, no military, no police\u2026 then they come here and tell us how to run our country. We don\u2019t want them,\u201d Trump said.<\/p>\n
Although he did not specify which nations might be affected, Trump hinted that the list could exceed 19 countries. He described them as \u201ccrime-ridden\u201d and argued that the US does not need immigrants from places that \u201cdon\u2019t register from a standpoint of success.\u201d<\/p>\n
Trump also commented on the attack involving two National Guard members, saying that soldier Andrew Wolfe is \u201cfighting for his life.\u201d He added that he plans to honour both service members at the White House.<\/p>\n
The President continued to criticize the previous Biden administration, accusing it of allowing \u201cunchecked and unvetted\u201d migrants to enter the US. On Truth Social, he blamed Joe Biden, former DHS Secretary Alejandro Mayorkas, and former Vice President Kamala Harris for what he called a failure in border management.<\/p>\n
The Department of Homeland Security echoed that criticism, calling the prior administration\u2019s immigration approach an \u201cact of national self-sabotage.\u201d DHS officials also linked the Biden-era \u201cOperation Allies Welcome\u201d program \u2014 under which shooting suspect Rahmanullah Lakanwal entered the US in 2021 \u2014 to current security concerns.<\/p>\n
Kristi Noem, serving as a DHS official, directly attributed responsibility for the death of National Guard member Spec. Sarah Beckstrom to Biden-era immigration decisions. Lakanwal, 29, has been charged with first-degree murder following Beckstrom\u2019s death. Staff Sergeant Andrew Wolfe, 24, remains in critical condition.<\/p>\n
