London (UK), June 22, 2026, BNN Web Staff: In a major political shake-up in the United Kingdom, Prime Minister and Labour Party leader Keir Starmer has announced his resignation, paving the way for a leadership contest that will determine both the future of the Labour Party and the country’s next prime minister.

Addressing the nation on Monday, Starmer said he had listened to growing concerns within his party over who was best placed to lead Labour into the next general election. He confirmed that he had informed King Charles III of his decision and requested the Labour Party’s National Executive Committee to begin the process of selecting a new leader.

Starmer stated that the leadership transition should be completed before Parliament reconvenes in September, ensuring a smooth handover of power. Under the proposed timetable, nominations for the Labour leadership race will open on July 9 and close on July 16.

In an emotional farewell speech, the outgoing prime minister thanked his wife, Victoria, and their children for their support throughout his political journey. He said he now looked forward to spending more time with his family after leaving what he described as “the biggest job in the country.”

The resignation follows months of mounting pressure on Starmer’s leadership. Labour’s disappointing performance in recent local elections, growing unrest among party MPs and ministers, and a series of political controversies had weakened his standing within the party. Calls for his departure intensified in recent weeks as senior Labour figures publicly questioned his ability to lead the party into the next election.

Attention is now turning to potential successors, with Andy Burnham widely viewed as a leading candidate after his recent political gains. However, other senior Labour figures may also enter the contest, setting the stage for a crucial leadership battle in the coming weeks.

Starmer’s departure comes less than two years after Labour secured a decisive election victory and returned to power. The transition will usher in a new chapter for British politics as the governing party seeks to restore unity and prepare for future electoral challenges.
