Washington, DC (US), September 26, 2026, BNN Web Staff: US President Donald Trump\u2019s approval rating has fallen to 37 per cent, according to a new Wall Street Journal poll, marking the lowest rating recorded for a president heading into midterm elections in the newspaper\u2019s polling dating back to 1990.<\/p>\n
The poll comes weeks before the November 3 US midterm elections, as Trump continues to campaign for Republican candidates and publicly predicts a strong performance by his party.<\/p>\n
The administration is facing pressure over the ongoing conflict with Iran as well as concerns over energy prices and inflation. A separate Reuters\/Ipsos poll released earlier this month put Trump\u2019s approval rating at 32 per cent, indicating that his standing varies across surveys and polling periods.<\/p>\n
Trump is also preparing to campaign in several Republican-leaning states ahead of the elections. According to Politico, he is expected to visit Iowa, Florida, Texas and Alaska, with a scheduled stop in Oklahoma next week, as he supports candidates he has endorsed.<\/p>\n
Meanwhile, the US Supreme Court has allowed the Trump administration to use a federal citizenship database to assist states in checking voter-registration records for possible noncitizens. The court\u2019s decision lifted a lower-court order that had restricted the Department of Homeland Security from expanding its use of a decades-old immigration database.<\/p>\n
The administration has argued that checking citizenship records is necessary to protect election integrity, while the legal dispute has centred on the federal government\u2019s role in responding to state and local requests to verify voter citizenship.<\/p>\n
The political developments come amid continued uncertainty over the US-Iran conflict. The Wall Street Journal reported that Trump rejected Iran\u2019s proposal for a seven-day ceasefire and has told aides that he expects US bombing operations against Iran to resume after the November midterm elections. The report cited US officials familiar with the matter.<\/p>\n
During his address to the United Nations General Assembly on September 22, Trump said he believed the US and Iran could reach an agreement after the election, while also warning that Iran could face further military action if a deal was not reached.<\/p>\n
Iranian Foreign Minister Abbas Araghchi said on Thursday that Tehran had proposed a seven-day plan aimed at ending the conflict, reopening the Strait of Hormuz and paving the way for broader negotiations over Iran\u2019s nuclear programme.<\/p>\n
