Washington DC (US), January 10, 2026, BNN Web Staff: The United States has reaffirmed its support for Bangladesh\u2019s democratic journey and upcoming elections during high-level meetings in Washington DC between Bangladesh\u2019s National Security Adviser (NSA) Khalilur Rahman and senior US officials.<\/p>\n
The discussions, held on Friday, focused on democratic processes, trade and economic cooperation, the Rohingya crisis, and regional matters, according to Bangladesh\u2019s Chief Adviser Press Wing.<\/p>\n
NSA Rahman met with Under-Secretary of State for Political Affairs Allison Hooker and Assistant Secretary of State Paul Kapur to address a range of issues.<\/p>\n
Rahman highlighted the potential for increased trade between the two nations, particularly following a rise in Bangladeshi imports of American agricultural products.<\/p>\n
He also requested easing visa procedures for Bangladeshi businessmen, including potential exemptions from the B1 short-term business visa bond, which Hooker assured would be positively considered.<\/p>\n
The Rohingya crisis featured prominently in discussions. Rahman expressed gratitude to the US for its sustained support for the displaced Rohingya population in Bangladesh, noting that the US is the largest donor for the refugees.<\/p>\n
Hooker commended Bangladesh for hosting the refugees and emphasized the need for broader international burden-sharing and expanded livelihood options for the Rohingya community.<\/p>\n
On economic and technological fronts, Rahman requested US consideration for Development Finance Corporation (DFC) financing access for Bangladeshi private sector projects, including semiconductor development.<\/p>\n
Hooker confirmed the US would review these proposals. Rahman also expressed Bangladesh\u2019s willingness, in principle, to participate in an international stabilization force for Gaza, with Hooker noting US readiness to collaborate.<\/p>\n
NSA Rahman additionally attended the swearing-in ceremony of Brent Christensen as the new US Ambassador to Bangladesh, administered by Deputy Secretary of State Michael J. Rigas. Ambassador Christensen emphasized US commitment to supporting Bangladesh\u2019s democratic transition and strengthening bilateral relations with the incoming elected government.<\/p>\n
The meetings follow similar support from India.
