Washington DC (US), June 30, 2026, BNN Web Staff: US President Donald Trump has announced that American and Iranian representatives are expected to meet in Doha, Qatar, on Tuesday for discussions centred on Iran’s nuclear programme.

However, Iran has denied that any formal negotiations with the United States are scheduled, highlighting conflicting accounts from both sides.

Speaking at the White House during the signing of an executive order on Monday, Trump described the proposed meeting as potentially significant but said its outcome remained uncertain.

“There’ll be a meeting on that tomorrow in Doha… we’ll see how that goes. The meeting in Doha is going to be perhaps important, perhaps not,” Trump said, reiterating that Washington’s primary objective is the denuclearisation of Iran.

The US President maintained that his administration remains committed to preventing Iran from acquiring nuclear weapons. “It’s really very simple, it’s the denuclearisation of Iran. We don’t want them to have a nuclear weapon, and they’re not going to have a nuclear weapon,” he said.

Earlier, Trump announced on his Truth Social platform that Iran had requested the meeting. White House Press Secretary Karoline Leavitt later said the talks had been arranged at Tehran’s request.

According to the White House, US Special Envoy Steve Witkoff and Senior Adviser Jared Kushner are leading the American delegation to Doha.

Iran, however, rejected claims that any bilateral negotiations with the US are taking place. Iranian Foreign Ministry spokesperson Esmail Baghaei said the Iranian delegation’s visit to Qatar is linked to the implementation of existing bilateral agreements and has no connection with the American delegation.

Baghaei added that negotiations on a final agreement have not yet begun, stating that several provisions of an existing Memorandum of Understanding must first be implemented before formal talks can commence.

The differing statements from Washington and Tehran come after heightened tensions between the two countries following recent maritime incidents in the Strait of Hormuz. While the US has projected optimism about diplomatic engagement, Iran has continued to downplay the possibility of direct negotiations.

Despite the conflicting public positions, Qatar remains an important intermediary, facilitating indirect communication between Washington and Tehran as efforts continue to ease regional tensions.
