Paris (France), October 8, 2026, BNN Web Staff: More than 266,000 people took to the streets across France on October 6 to demand better funding and improved conditions in public high schools, as police fired tear gas to disperse protesters in several cities.

The demonstrations brought together students, teachers, parents and trade union members, with protesters highlighting teacher shortages, overcrowded classrooms and deteriorating school buildings. France’s Interior Ministry reported that more than 6,100 people had been arrested since the protest movement began in mid-September, the overwhelming majority of them minors.

According to the Associated Press, nearly 500 people were detained during Tuesday’s demonstrations alone. The largest rallies took place in Paris and other major cities, including Marseille and Strasbourg, while clashes were reported in several locations.

Poor school conditions fuel protests

Students have raised concerns about leaking roofs, mould, rat infestations and inadequate classroom facilities. They are also demanding sufficient teaching staff and increased investment in public education.

The protests began in the Paris region in September before spreading nationwide. School blockades and class boycotts have disrupted lessons, with some schools suspending classes amid unrest and safety concerns.

Teenagers injured in clashes with police

The police response has come under scrutiny following reports of serious injuries among young demonstrators. A 15-year-old boy lost a hand in an incident involving a police stun grenade in the northern city of Lens, while another teenager suffered severe facial injuries after being struck by a tear gas grenade.

Interior Minister Laurent Nuñez announced a temporary suspension of the use of the stun grenade model linked to the Lens incident pending an investigation. The government has also faced calls to examine allegations of excessive force against minors.

Government promises action on school facilities

Prime Minister Sébastien Lecornu has acknowledged students’ concerns and pledged that the government would present proposals by the end of October. The proposed measures are expected to address teacher replacements, school building renovations and other problems affecting daily school life.

The protests have also triggered a wider political debate over public spending and the government’s priorities ahead of the next presidential election. Demonstrators, however, continue to demand concrete improvements rather than assurances.

With school blockades and demonstrations continuing, pressure is mounting on the French government to address deteriorating infrastructure and staffing shortages while ensuring the safety of students and others participating in protests.
