PM Modi to Inaugurate Major Healthcare Infrastructure at PGIMER Chandigarh on July 17

CHANDIGARH, JULY 8, 2026: Prime Minister Narendra Modi is scheduled to visit Chandigarh on July 17, 2026, to officially inaugurate a series of highly anticipated mega healthcare and academic infrastructure projects, highlighted by state-of-the-art facilities at the Post Graduate Institute of Medical Education and Research (PGIMER).

While early budget estimates pegged the initial phases of the foundational work at approximately Rs. 435 crores, recent administrative reports confirm that the cumulative value of the healthcare infrastructure being unveiled at the premier medical institute is nearly Rs. 1,000 crores.

The Chandigarh administration and PGIMER authorities have gone into priority mode to finalize arrangements for the high-profile event. Though final security protocols are being established, officials indicate that the Punjab Engineering College (PEC) ground is currently emerging as the primary venue choice for the centralized event.

Redefining Tertiary Healthcare in North India

The upcoming inauguration will mark the formal opening of major specialized centers at PGIMER designed to drastically ease patient load and expand specialized care for patients across Punjab, Haryana, Himachal Pradesh, and Jammu & Kashmir.

The core projects include:

Advanced Neuroscience Centre (ANC): Built at a cost of approximately Rs. 490 crores, this six-storey facility is dedicated entirely to consolidating neurology and neurosurgery services under one roof. Spanning over 47,000 square meters, it houses 10 modular operation theaters, intensive care units, and specialized emergency care designed to handle complex brain and spine disorders.

New Mother and Child Care Centre: A massive Rs. 485 crore facility boasting over 300 beds dedicated to strengthening advanced maternal, neonatal, and pediatric healthcare. Notably, the center features state-of-the-art diagnostic and clinical equipment worth Rs. 150 crores, funded through a corporate social responsibility (CSR) partnership with the Infosys Foundation.

Additional Extensions: The event is also expected to look at the unveiling of a newly constructed Critical Care Block alongside auxiliary department expansions aimed at boosting the region’s trauma emergency response.

Broader City-Wide Impact

The Prime Minister’s visit will extend beyond healthcare. Alongside the PGIMER medical complexes, PM Modi is expected to inaugurate the long-delayed multipurpose auditorium at Panjab University’s (PU) South Campus—a project that has been 17 years in the making—offering a massive 2,200-seating capacity for the region’s academic circuit.

A high-level PGI official, speaking on the condition of anonymity, noted: “We are working on a war footing to ensure seamless execution. These centers are ready to fully absorb the heavy patient footfall that currently strains our main Nehru Hospital building.”

A final itinerary and confirmation regarding whether certain segments of the inauguration will be handled physically or via a digital link are expected from the Prime Minister’s Office (PMO) in the coming days.
