A Sacramento husband who told detectives ICE agents snatched his wife while she checked the mail has been charged with her murder after her burned remains turned up nearly 70 miles away.
Jasmine Gill, a 30-year-old registered nurse and mother of an 8-month-old boy, was last seen at the couple’s Sacramento home on September 30. Her cousin reported her missing on October 4. Gurinder Gill, 28, claimed Immigration and Customs Enforcement agents had taken her into custody outside the residence. Detectives contacted ICE. The agency confirmed no enforcement activity had occurred at the home.
The Sacramento County Sheriff’s Office stated: “As the investigation progressed, Sacramento County Sheriff’s Office detectives identified several inconsistencies in Gurinder’s statements about his wife’s disappearance. Detectives learned that Jasmine and Gurinder were engaged in an ongoing divorce and child custody dispute.”
On October 1—the day after she was last seen and days before the missing-person report—burned human remains were discovered in El Dorado County near the Mormon Emigrant Trail. Jewelry found with the remains helped identify them as Jasmine Gill. Homicide detectives obtained an arrest warrant. On October 14 they located Gurinder, executed search warrants at two residences tied to him, and booked him into the Sacramento County Main Jail on murder charges. He is ineligible for bail.
Jasmine followed her mother’s path into nursing after her father died young and her mother raised the children alone in India while working full-time as a nurse. Family members said she was seeking a divorce to secure a safer future for herself and her infant son.
In a statement on the family’s GoFundMe, they wrote: “Perhaps the most heartbreaking part of her story is that she was fighting for a better future for herself and her baby. She was seeking a divorce. She was trying to find the freedom, safety, and fresh start they both deserved. Tragically, before she could build that future, Jasmine was murdered, leaving behind the very child she was fighting so hard to protect.”
Sgt. Edward Igoe of the Sacramento County Sheriff’s Office called it “just an absolutely unfortunate worst-case scenario event” and noted that solid detective work exposed the inconsistencies and identified both the victim and the person responsible.
Gurinder Gill faces a murder charge alleging he killed his wife with malice aforethought on or about September 30. The investigation remains active.
