School of Punjabi Studies, Panjab University Organises Orientation Programme for New Students

Chandigarh, September 11, 2026: The School of Punjabi Studies, Panjab University, Chandigarh, organised an Orientation Programme for the students of M.A. Punjabi, M.A. Punjabi with Research, and Diploma in Translation (English to Punjabi) at the Mohan Singh Diwana Hall, Panjab University, Chandigarh.

Welcoming the students, Dr. Parmjeet Sidhu, Chairperson, School of Punjabi Studies, highlighted the glorious academic tradition of the Punjabi Department and the distinguished scholarship of its teachers. Sharing her own journey, she told the students that she too had once been a student of the same Department and encouraged them to dream big, work hard and strive to turn their aspirations into reality.

Prof. Uma Sethi, spoke on “A Place to Learn, Belong & Grow: Your Journey with the School of Punjabi Studies”. She familiarised the students with the academic environment of the department and encouraged them to actively participate in its academic and co-curricular life.

Prof. Yograj Angrish spoke on “Panjab University: Its Legacy, Academic Culture & Student Life”. He introduced the students to the rich legacy of Panjab University and various dimensions of academic and student life on the campus.

Dr. Balwinder Singh, an Assistant professor from MDRC, Dept of evening Studies, delivered an engaging talk on “Understanding Today’s Student: Interests, Aspirations and the Role of the Teacher”. Drawing upon his experiences with students, he discussed their interests, dreams and aspirations, and emphasised that teachers have an important role in guiding them towards the right path. He stressed that education should not merely produce job-seekers but should also inspire students to become good, responsible and sensitive human beings.

Prof. Sarabjit Singh spoke on “Academic Pathways, Research Opportunities & Career Prospects in Punjabi and Translation”. He apprised the students of opportunities for higher studies, research, teaching, translation and other career avenues in the field.

Dr. Parveen Kumar, CDOE, Panjab University, briefed the students about “Hostel Facilities, Rules & Management System”. He provided useful information regarding hostel facilities and the rules and procedures to be followed by students.

The orientation was organised with the support of Punjabi Sahit Sabha, Alumni Cell, Placement Cell and IQAC Cell, School of Punjabi Studies, Panjab University, with the objective of helping students begin their academic journey with greater awareness, confidence and purpose.
