Rights groups hold ‘Torch March’ at Harike; Seek memorial and justice in Jaswant Singh Khalra case
Ferozepur, July 13, 2026: Various rights-based organisations, farmers’ unions, social and religious groups organised a protest demonstration followed by a torch march at Harike Head, the site associated with the martyrdom of human rights activist Shaheed Bhai Jaswant Singh Khalra, to pay tribute to his legacy and press for long-pending demands.
The protest witnessed participation from leaders and members of several organisations, including Krantikari Kisan Union, Democratic Teachers’ Front (DTF), Kisan Student Union, and other civil society groups. Prominent participants included Avtar Singh Mehma, State Vice-President of Krantikari Kisan Union, Malkeet Singh Haraj, District President of DTF, and Jagrup Singh Bhullar, President of Kisan Student Union.
Addressing the gathering, the speakers remembered Bhai Jaswant Singh Khalra’s contribution to highlighting alleged human rights violations and cases of enforced disappearances during the militancy period in Punjab. They said his sacrifice continues to inspire those working for justice, truth and the protection of human rights.
An ‘Ardas’ was offered in memory of Bhai Khalra and other martyrs, following which participants carried out a torch march from Harike Head to the Rajasthan Feeder.
Speaking to the media, the organisers demanded that the film based on the life of Bhai Jaswant Singh Khalra be allowed to be screened in cinemas across Punjab and worldwide without restrictions so that younger generations can learn about his life and work. They also urged the government to construct a memorial at Harike Head, near the Sutlej River, to commemorate Bhai Khalra and other martyrs.
The organisations further called for the complete truth regarding the alleged killings and enforced disappearances of innocent Sikh and Punjabi men and women to be made public. They demanded that all those found responsible, including officials named in connection with the case, be held accountable and punished in accordance with the law.
The organisers stated that the pursuit of justice and the preservation of the memory of those who lost their lives would remain a collective responsibility and that their campaign would continue in the future.
