‘Maa, Mujhe Tagore Bana De’ Leaves Audience Moved and Reflective
Chandigarh: Punjabi Literary Society, School of Punjabi Studies, Panjab University, Chandigarh, organised a solo play, ‘Maa, Mujhe Tagore Bana De’, inspired by the celebrated story ‘Mainu Tagore Bana De Maa’ by renowned Punjabi story writer Mohan Bhandari. The play was performed by Jammu-based theatre artist Luckyjee Gupta. The performance, held at Mohan Singh Diwana Hall, not only entertained the audience but also encouraged them to reflect deeply on various social realities.
The distinctive feature of Luckyjee Gupta’s solo performance was that he portrayed several characters single-handedly through his versatile acting. The psychological and social portrayal of characters living on the margins of society and struggling with their unfulfilled aspirations formed an important aspect of the play. During the performance, Luckyjee also involved members of the audience as characters in the play, thereby breaking the conventional distance between the stage and the audience. This creative technique made the presentation more engaging and vibrant, and was greatly appreciated by the audience. Despite the use of limited stage resources, the imaginative use of the stage and the vivid portrayal of different characters demonstrated Luckyjee’s strong command of the theatrical medium.
On the occasion, Chairperson of the department, Dr. Parmjeet Kaur Sidhu, congratulated Luckyjee Gupta on the successful and impactful performance. She said that the portrayal of different characters and their inner struggles with such sensitivity was deeply moving and left a lasting impression on the audience. She observed that such theatrical presentations at the university not only connect students and research scholars with literature but also provide them an opportunity to understand society from an artistic and sensitive perspective. She also thanked Luckyjee Gupta for his distinctive presentation.Eminent playwright Pali Bhupinder appreciated the performance and described it as an excellent example of the solo theatre genre. He said that bringing different characters to life through a single performer was a testament to the actor’s versatility as well as his acting and directorial abilities.
The event was attended by Prof. Yograj, Prof. Uma Sethi, Prof. Akwinder Kaur Tanvi, Dr. Pawan, Ravi Kumar, Dr. Sukhjit Kaur and Jaspal Singh. A large number of research scholars and students from the Departments of Punjabi, Sanskrit and French, along with theatre enthusiasts, were also present.
