Chandigarh, August 17, 2026: Dr. Parmjeet Kaur Sidhu, Chairperson of the School of Punjabi Studies at Panjab University, Chandigarh, represented the university at the Punjabi Conference UK 2026, organised by the Sikh Education Council UK at University College London (UCL) on August 8 and 9.
The international conference brought together scholars and researchers from Punjab, Lahore, Denmark, Canada, the UK and other parts of the world to discuss contemporary issues related to the Punjabi language, literature, education and culture.
The conference provided an important international academic platform for Punjabi scholarship, with research papers presented in Gurmukhi at a leading British university. The event was seen as a significant step towards strengthening the presence of Punjabi in international academic spaces and promoting Punjabi studies among the diaspora.
Dr. Parmjeet Kaur Sidhu presented her research paper titled “Punjabi Language and Cultural Identity in the Globalized Digital Era: Challenges and Opportunities.” The paper examined the challenges confronting Punjabi language and cultural identity amid globalisation and rapid digital transformation. It also highlighted the potential of digital technologies in preserving, promoting and globally disseminating Punjabi language and culture.
The conference featured discussions on a range of subjects, including Punjabi in the era of Artificial Intelligence, Punjabi education in the diaspora, lexicography, and the life and contribution of Bhai Kahn Singh Nabha.
The organisers also announced a major academic initiative leading up to an international conference dedicated to Bhai Kahn Singh Nabha in 2030. Dr. Parmjeet Kaur Sidhu was presented with a certificate of honour in recognition of her participation and academic contribution to the conference.
She expressed her gratitude to the organisers for providing a valuable platform for scholars to engage with Punjabi studies and scholarship at the international level.
