Panjab University Hosts Expert Lecture on Indo-Greek Intellectual Traditions
Dr. Anil Kumar Singh Discusses Civilizational Links Between India and Greece at PU
Chandigarh, 17 February 2026-
The Punjabi Sahit Sabha, School of Punjabi Studies, Panjab University, organized a special lecture on 17 February 2026 on the theme “India as Reflected in Greek Literature.” The lecture was delivered by Dr. Anil Kumar Singh, Professor, Greek Chair School of Languages, Literature and Culture Studies, Jawaharlal Nehru University and Honorary President of the Indo-Hellenic Research Centre.
The programme began with a welcome address by the department’s Chairperson, Prof. Yog RajAngrish, who highlighted the academic importance of the topic. The session was conducted by Associate Professor Dr. Paramjit Kaur Sidhu, who introduced the speaker and spoke about the relevance of the Greek intellectual tradition for students of language, literature, and culture.
In his lecture, Dr. Anil Kumar Singh discussed references to India in ancient Greek literature, historical records, and travel accounts. He noted that both India and Greece possess long traditions of knowledge and philosophy, and that there has been sustained intellectual contact between the two civilizations. He emphasized that understanding these early interactions is important for a broader understanding of world history.
On this occasion, research scholar Gurcharan also shared information about the Greek Chair established at Jawaharlal Nehru University. The lecture was followed by a question-and-answer session, during which students and research scholars interacted with the speaker.
The programme concluded with the presentation of a memento to Dr. Singh. Among those present were Prof. Dr. Sarabjit Singh, Dr. Akvinder Tanvi, Dr. Pawan Kumar, Ravi Kumar, and Jaspal Singh, along with a large number of research scholars and students. The lecture was well received by the audience.
