PU Chandigarh: Bridging the Gap Between AI Technology and Punjabi Language
Chandigarh, May 5, 2026: A meeting of the Expert Advisory Committee on trilingual AI-ML terminology has commenced at Punjab University, Chandigarh.
The five-day meeting of the Expert Advisory Committee (EAC), organized by the School of Punjabi Studies, Punjab University, to develop an English–Hindi–Punjabi trilingual glossary in the fields of Artificial Intelligence (AI) and Machine Learning (ML), began today at Mohan Singh Diwana Hall. The meeting is being organised from May 5 to May 9, 2026, in collaboration with the Commission for Scientific and Technical Terminology (CSTT), Ministry of Education, Government of India.
The inaugural session of the meeting began with the ceremonial lighting of the lamp. On this occasion, Hon’ble Vice-Chancellor Prof. Renu Vig and Hon’ble Rajya Sabha Member Shri Satnam Singh Sandhu attended as Chief Guests. Dr. Paramjit Sidhu, Head, Department of Punjabi, welcomed the guests and members of the Expert Advisory Committee. The objectives and significance of this initiative were outlined by Deepak Kumar, Assistant Director, CSTT.
Nominated Rajya Sabha Member Satnam Singh Sandhu, while addressing the students as Chief Guest, stated that the availability of technical knowledge in Indian languages will greatly benefit students from rural areas and non-English backgrounds. He said that this initiative will contribute significantly towards building an inclusive and self-reliant India and will encourage students to learn in their mother tongue. He further emphasized that in the age of AI, new opportunities have opened up for regional languages.
He stressed the need to bring forward passionate writers and scholars for the growth and promotion of the Punjabi mother tongue. He remarked that the biggest challenge today is to preserve and promote Punjab, Punjabi culture, and heritage. Expressing his views on the current situation of Punjab, he emphasized the urgent need to adopt a ‘Punjab Policy’ for the state’s development. He also encouraged students to use new technologies ethically while exploring employment opportunities.
In her address, Vice-Chancellor Prof. Renu Vig stated that multilingual technical education is the need of the hour, and this initiative is an important step in alignment with the National Education Policy 2020 and national AI initiatives. She added that Punjab University has always prioritized Punjab and Punjabi language. Highlighting Punjab’s heritage and the university’s foundation, she said that the university has always been at the forefront in serving Punjab and Punjabi.
Experts and scholars in language and technology from across the country have participated in the meeting. In the coming days, detailed deliberations will be held on the development of trilingual technical terminology related to AI/ML.
This initiative is being seen as an important step towards building an inclusive knowledge society through the integration of language and technology.
